The United States has warned of serious consequences if terrorists associated with a group linked to a former al-Qaeda wing in Syria have taken control of Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria and said it would make it difficult for Russia to resume the recent bombing.
In a message published on the internet late Wednesday, the top US State Department official said the policy in Syria, Michael Ratney, was that the latest attack launched by the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, spearheaded by the former al-Nusra Front, which was the al-Qaeda branch in Syria, strengthened its control over the province and "presents the future of northern Syria with great danger" .
"Northern Syria has seen one of its biggest tragedies," said Ratney, who stood behind secret talks with Moscow in Amman on a cease-fire announced by US president Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in July .
Ratney says "If Al-Nusra dominates Idlib, it will be difficult for the United States to persuade the international parties to take the necessary military action."
Idlib province is the only one entirely under the control of the opposition and has been a major target of Russian and Syrian air strikes that have caused hundreds of civilian deaths and injuries.
Many people fear that the domination of Idlib by terrorists will make the province the target of incessant attacks by Russian and Syrian forces, destroying them into Aleppo or another (Iraq) Mosul .
