The White House announced that US president Donald Trump had signed a bill imposing sanctions against Russia, despite his dissatisfaction with the matter.
As Trump described the decision as "very flawed," he appealed to Congress not to use the work to hinder US efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, The new legislation includes sanctions against Iran and North Korea as well.
Trump added in his statement "Although I support strict measures to deter the aggressive and destabilizing behaviour of Iran, North Korea and Russia, this legislation is highly flawed," .
The sanctions, passed by Congress a few days ago, relate to allegations of Moscow's involvement in the recent United States presidential election and its policy towards Ukraine ,Russia denies interfering in the US election, and Trump denied collusion with Russia.
Russia has responded to congressional approval of the legislation by the decision to expel 755 US diplomats.
US Secretary of State Rex Tilerson said he and Trump were "not very happy" with the legislation.
Tillerson said, referring to members of Congress "We have made it clear that we do not think it is useful for our efforts, but this is the decision they have taken,"
Tillerson added that "They made a stunning decision, and I think the president would accept that,"
